The Huawei Mate 40 series is now official

Huawei has lost market share in phones since the U.S. veto, but the company is continuing with launches, while diversifying with new products. As already revealed by the leaks, the Huawei Mate 40 series aims high to win back users, with juicy improvements not only in hardware but also in software, with a renewed App Gallery, the release of Petal Maps and image search in Petal Search. In total there are three phones in the series: Mate 40, Mate 40 Pro and Mate 40 Pro Plus. A special version designed with Porsche is added to them, the Mate 40 RS.

Mate 40 Pro

The design of the Mate 40 Pro does not differ in essence from its predecessor, Mate 30 Pro. It retains the circular module in which the camera is housed, although without the ring that surrounded it as an ornament. It also retains the extremely curved 6.76-inch screen with a high-resolution OLED panel (2,772 x 1,344) and a 90 Hz refresh rate. Inside, it operates with the Kirin 9000 5nm 5G SoC processor, 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage.

In the photographic section, the camera inherits the four lenses, in this model it has a main lens of 50 MP, an ultra wide angle of 20 MP, a telephoto of 12 MP and an optical zoom of 7X. This set developed with Leica is ready to take action video with Steady Shot stabilizer, film travellings, capture tracking shots and create stories with the Story Creator application that works automatically.

The dual camera, with a 3D depth sensor and a gesture sensor, automatically adapts the angle when you take a selfie and allows you to control the phone with movements in the air, something that comes in handy for cooking without dirtying the screen when consulting the recipe.

Huawei Mate 40 Pro incorporates a 4,400 mAh battery and a 65 W charger. The latter, in the Mate 30 was 40 W, and improves wired charging by 60 percent and wireless by 85 percent, according to Huawei.

To optimize energy consumption, with the EoD (Eyes on Display) system, information is only shown on the screen when the user is looking at it. And, of course, the Mate 40 series is enabled with the Multi-Screen Collaboration function, for the interaction of the phone with laptops, for example, to chat with the mobile while watching a video on the web (performing both activities from the PC screen).

The other family members

The Mate 40 model resembles its big brother in design, but in small, 6.5 inches, and with the sides not so curved. It also doesn’t match the camera, with four 50 MP lenses, a 16 MP ultra-wide-angle lens, an 8 MP telephoto and a 5X optical zoom. And the Selfies are not dual. It comes in white, black and silver and two others with the back in vegan leather, one in green and one in blue.

Mate 40 Pro Plus has a 6.76 inch Flex OLED screen and 3D face unlocking. The most advanced version comes with a camera better than any other, with a 50 MP main lens, a 20 MP ultra wide angle lens, a ToF sensor, a 12 MP lens and 10X zoom, a 12 MP telephoto with 3z zoom and a 17 X optical zoom. This device boasts of being the first to have an anti-distortion sensor. It is available in two colors, black and white.

And, as rumored, an edition developed with the car manufacturer Porsche: Mate 40 RS Porsche Design, with the camera of the Mate Pro Plus hexagonal design and an infrared temperature meter, as explained by Richard Yu in the presentation. There are two colors to choose from, black and white.

The Huawei Mate 40 Pro is on sale in Europe with a price of 1,199 euros (8GB and 256 GB), to choose between the color black or gray. The Mate 40 is worth 899 euros (8GB and 128GB). The Mate Pro Plus model costs 1,399 euros (12 GB and 256 GB) and the special edition Mate 40 RS costs 2,295 euros (12 GB and 512 GB).

Huawei also wants to empower the software. And for that, Huawei’s phone search engine, Petal Search, will have an improved version. Now it already gives the possibility to search from an image but it will be more complete. It will not be necessary to know the name of something to find it. Simply capture the image of something (an app, a bag, a phone, a person…) and instantly, through artificial intelligence, it will give you the result. This search is done through a bar located on the main screen of the phone, simply by selecting the icon with a camera that appears on the right.

On the other hand, the company has launched the Petal Maps app that is capable of generating a 2D or 3D navigation map and calculating the traffic and route in real time. It will be released in 140 countries in 79 languages. And the best thing for driving safely: the user will not need to touch the phone’s screen to use this service, but will be able to do so hands-free. “Thanks to the gesture control of the new Mate 40 series devices, drivers can switch between the navigation view and the map overview simply by bringing the palm of their hand close to the screen, without touching it”, explains the company.

“Available in more than 100 countries and regions, Huawei Docs allows viewing and editing of documents in more than 50 formats, including PDF, PPT and DOC. With real-time synchronization enabled by the cloud’s capabilities, HUAWEI Docs allows users to work seamlessly on the same document from different devices registered with the same HUAWEI ID, improving the ‘smart office’ experience,” said Huawei.

The App Gallery is also renewed. It is the third most powerful app store in the world with 400 million active users every month. What’s more, some of the games already generate more revenue there than in Google Play, according to Huawei. And to continue growing, the Chinese multinational is introducing new features. Now, the application comes with a new format that prioritizes the vertical position, separates apps and games and gives more prominence to the editorial content (with local teams in each country), showing less number of apps on the screen but more relevant to the user (different in each country).
