LG Wing phone review: a different approach

We suppose that some time ago, in some boardroom of the LG corporate in South Korea, someone had the idea of creating a different cell phone; today we can say “mission accomplished”. The LG Wing is a different phone… The best? The one we would buy? The most efficient? The answer is no to all of the above questions, but it is a peculiar proposal.

Design

This is where this phone is interesting because it is a unit that integrates two screens, one on top of the other; the one on top is the main one, of normal size for a current mobile: 6.8 inches; the one below is 3.9 inches, and to discover it, you have to rotate the other 90 degrees to the left. The result is a smartphone in the shape of a “T”, something we have never seen before.

This allows us to have two applications at the same time, one in a horizontal way and the one below in a vertical way. It is worth mentioning that only a few applications -very few- are optimized to take advantage of the phone.

Another peculiarity, not original, is that the selfies camera is hidden in the body of the phone until it is needed: a small motorized frame comes out of the phone to take the picture, which is not new, as Xiaomi and Oppo have shown, but it does not stop drawing attention. This camera is 32 megapixels.

Its screen splice design makes it a bit thick, but nothing that bothers or is detrimental. Its weight, on the other hand, is to be considered, with 260 grams: it does take up a considerable amount of space in the front pocket of the pants.

Cameras

The smartphone has the hidden camera already mentioned and three sensors on the back: 64 megapixel main, 13 megapixel wide angle and 12 megapixel ultra wide angle. In terms of video, it is capable of taking clips with 4K resolution at 60 frames per second; but when using gimbal mode, i.e., the phone with the two cameras, it can only record in Full HD resolution.

Speaking of the gimbal mode, this is the only compelling reason that could justify the purchase of this phone, besides the fact that it is the best use of its design. LG is not shy to say that this unit is for content creators. Finally, this mode offers the possibility to rotate the shot without moving the phone and stabilize the content at the touch of a button; this is achieved with software and the ultra-wide-angle camera.

In other words, with this cell phone, the need to pay for an additional gimbal is eliminated.

Another outstanding mode is simultaneous recording, that is, you can record with the front and rear camera at the same time, something very useful when making a descriptive video. It does not come to mind that we have seen this option in some other phone, which confirms the objective of making the LG Wing for audiovisual content creators.

Price

Yes, it is an innovative model, but its price is $1,000, the same cost of an iPhone 12 Pro or a Samsung Galaxy S20. For now, it’s available only from Verizon in the United States.

The LG Wing is a 5G phone, good news for those lucky enough to live in close proximity to such an antenna.

**Conclusion

The LG Wing is not for everyone, its price is not like having it as an extra unit, but for content creators, read youtubero, it could be one of your best options. If you have the money required for this cell phone, better choose more recognized brands, such as Apple, Samsung or Huawei. We give LG points for trying to do something innovative, but it won’t dethrone any giants, not at the moment.
