Apple has just made official the new iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus, iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max. Four new models that arrive to replace the iPhone 13 family. One more year, it is not so easy to find the key differences between each of the iPhones, so let’s compare the new catalog to put order.

Bottom line, the Pro models are the standout choices this year, as the iPhone 14s inherit virtually all of the hardware we saw last generation. There are certain leaps compared to last year, but also controversial decisions such as keeping the processor of the iPhone 13 in the new models.

This is what the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus look like

At the design level, the differences are quite clear. The iPhone 14 series is not finished in stainless steel, but maintains the flat-cut aluminum that we have been seeing since the iPhone 12. The notch continues to make an appearance, and is the main identifying element of the “non Pro” models when we look at them from the front. The dimensions are similar to those of their Pro siblings, with the main difference given by the weight, mainly due to the construction materials used.

In the case of the iPhone 14, the panel has the same specifications as the iPhone 13. 6.1 inches, 60 Hz, OLED and support for HDR10. This year’s novelty, the iPhone 14 Plus, goes up to 6.7 inches, the same size as the Pro Max model, but without a high refresh rate. Apple’s goal is to have an “entry-level” iPhone at 6.7 inches, without reaching the price of the Pro Max model.

The two models arrive with the Apple A15 Bionic, a processor that is still more powerful than its competition, but that we already saw last year. Apple had never repeated processor in recent years, and it may become a common trend that only the Pro models have the latest hardware. No details have emerged about the RAM, but leaks suggest that both have 6 GB of LPDDR4X type.

The cameras also have the same resolution as last year, 12 megapixels for both the wide-angle and wide-angle. There is no telephoto lens or support for ProRAW features, which are reserved for the Pro models.

This is what the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max look like.

Apple is starting to distance its Pro models from the standard models, and the gap between them was getting smaller and smaller. This year all the ambition is set on these two models that, for the first time since the iPhone X, renounce the notch. This has been replaced by a small island accompanied by a second circle, a somewhat different configuration that will make the Pro models quite recognizable when looking at them from the front.

This island acts as a sort of notification LED, integrating itself into the operating system and changing its size depending on the active notification (calls, music player, etc.). It is open to third-party applications, so any developer will be able to integrate their notifications within this island.

The second major difference compared to the iPhone 14 is the Apple A16 Bionic, Apple’s new processor for this year 2022 and a good part of 2023. Apple promises that this SoC is more powerful than the A15, but has not given too much concrete data on its differences.

The camera also comes with a historic change in Apple and is that, for the first time, it makes the leap to 48 megapixels. The final shot, as we have seen in recent years on Android, is taken at 12 megapixels, as there is a grouping of 4 pixels in 1. When shooting in ProRAW format we do have the option to shoot at full resolution.
