Differences between the Samsung Galaxy Fold and Galaxy Fold 2

Some were surprised that Samsung gave space -at its Unpacked 2020 event- to those who had the opportunity to critically review the first Galaxy Fold. The company assured that the creators of the foldable had listened to the critics and that they were now responding with the Galaxy Fold 2, of which we do not have all the details. In any case, it is already possible to talk about some important differences between the Samsung Galaxy Fold and Galaxy Fold 2 models.

Design

The Galaxy Fold 2 continues with the design seen in the first generation of the series, that is, it opens and folds like a book or a magazine, unlike those smartphones that have adopted the “clamshell” format, such as the folding Motorola Razr or the same Galaxy Z Flip.

However, the great novelty in the recent hybrid between tablet and phone is that it allows to place it as if it were a laptop: the back of the device that has no screen could be placed on a base, while the other end could be opened at 90 degrees to, for example, watch videos without having to hold it (as shown in the following image).

Samsung also managed to make a thinner foldable, since when open, it has a thickness of 6 millimeters (the Galaxy Fold is 7.6 millimeters), plus it improved the hinge precisely so that it can be used in more modes.

Screen

The screen on the new Galaxy Fold 2 presents a substantial evolution with respect to the first generation, not only in what has to do with size, but also with respect to its technology.

While -when open- the Infinity Flex Display of the Galaxy Fold is 7.3 inches and with QXGA+ resolution (2,152 x 1,536 pixels), the Dynamic AMOLED 2X of the new phone, made with an ultra-thin glass (UTG) and flexible, reaches 7. 6 inches and comes with Full HD+ resolution (2,208 x 1,768 pixels), plus it has a 120 Hz refresh rate, a feature that comes to the fore when browsing the cell phone’s interface or viewing action content.

The external display, which is activated when the gadget is closed, has a size of 4.6 inches and HD+ resolution in the previous version; while that of the Galaxy Fold 2 is 6.2 inches.

Both the external and internal panel, in the mobile presented this August 5, look cleaner, plus they extend from edge to edge because the edges are very thin (especially on the larger screen). Also, the fact that Samsung has decided to put the front cameras inside a hole in the displays, as it has done in other of its high-end units, also contributes to having more prominent screens in the Galaxy Fold 2.

Optics

As mentioned above, the Galaxy Fold 2’s Infinity-O type displays feature the front cameras, which are 10 megapixels, so there is not much difference with the Galaxy Fold. What is that this cell phone incorporates a pair of lenses on the display of larger dimensions, in a kind of tab that does not look integrated into the design.

Regarding the rear optics of the second generation of the foldable, it consists of a 12-megapixel main sensor with optical stabilization, 12-megapixel ultra wide-angle and 12-megapixel telephoto. The Galaxy Fold also has three cameras, only the ultra wide-angle is 16 megapixels.

Processing

Obviously, Samsung put the best in processing for its Galaxy Fold 2. Thus, it includes a Snapdragon 865 Plus and 12 GB RAM, so in addition to offering optimal response in all kinds of applications, the phone is compatible with the 5G network. Regarding storage, it is 256 GB, enough to store images and other content generated with the unit.

The Galaxy Fold comes standard with the Snapdragon 855, 12 GB RAM and 512 GB storage.

Price

Samsung will give more details on the price of the Galaxy Fold 2 when September 2020 starts, what is certain is that this is expected to be close to that of the first generation of the phone, that is, about $ 2,000 dollars.

As this is a relatively new and evolving cell phone segment, the final cost will certainly not be affordable. We can only wait to see what the company announces in the near future.
