Corning wants to put an end to scratches on mobile cameras: launches new Gorilla Glass designed for lenses

Corning, the company behind Gorilla Glass, has announced a new technology to protect cell phone cameras. According to Corning, this glass not only seeks to avoid the typical scratches typical of carrying the phone in your pocket, but its anti-reflective coating promises to let in more light than conventional coatings.

According to Corning, Samsung will be the first company to adopt this new product in its mobile cameras, so we can expect to see it in its next flagships.

Gorilla Glass for cameras

Corning’s lens glass falls under the Gorilla Glass DX and Gorilla Glass DX+ category. This technology was announced back in 2018 and was initially focused only on smartwatches. In fact, Samsung was among the first companies to implement it in its Galaxy Watch. Now this category is expanding to protect the camera of cell phones as well.

According to Corning, one of the keys to this glass is that it not only protects against scratches, but also improves optical performance. Cell phone lenses have anti-reflective coatings to improve light gathering. That coating, however, can cause some of the light to bounce back and result in weird artifacts in the image.

According to the company, conventional coatings let 95% of light through, while Gorilla Glass DX and DX+ let 98% of light through. On paper, more light, better photos, although we already know that the quality of a photo depends on many factors.

At the moment we do not know which will be the first smartphone to use this technology, but Corning claims that Samsung will be the first manufacturer to incorporate it. We will have to wait until the Korean firm makes a statement on the matter to know its performance.
