Apple to use Samsung for future iPhone lenses

Apple and Samsung are two of the world’s largest smartphone manufacturers, but that rivalry could be put aside… at least when it comes to a specific feature of a future iPhone.

As reported by Taiwanese portal Digitimes, the Cupertino firm is aiming to strengthen the zoom capabilities of its smartphones.

With that idea in mind, it would be looking for an ally in South Korea, so the name of Samsung immediately jumps to the forefront.

Although there is no formal agreement, it transcended that Apple would be interested in using a Samsung periscope lens.

Currently, several manufacturers use this type of camera in their phones, allowing them to achieve higher zoom levels than traditional lenses.

Samsung counts the Galaxy S20 Ultra as its most notable example, whose lens is capable of up to 100x magnification.

Apple, on the other hand, has never used this type of technology in its smartphones, although it is apparently aware that it is increasingly in demand by users.

Negotiations are in early stages, according to Digitimes, so it is unclear whether this feature will be incorporated into the iPhone 13 or some later phone.

As The Next Web notes, Apple usually waits until technologies - such as the periscope camera - are mature and have passed multiple tests before incorporating them into its devices.

This gives it two advantages over its rivals: it makes its devices much more reliable and also allows it to create a long-term roadmap for its products.
